Style 101 | Ledisi Style

Ledisi1

While Ledisi’s latest hit, Pieces of Me (from the same-titled album) is heating up the charts, her locstyle is number 1 with Loc’d Life. Ask anyone, and most will agree that her twisted updo is her signature style—a twisted Mohawk that angles towards the front, erupting in curled locs at the front and crown. Medium-length to long locs are the perfect candidates. We searched the Web to see how to get the look, and here it is, courtesy of  LocsofNTegrity (http://www.youtube.com/user/

  1. Apply a oil moisturizing spray to your locs to make them supple. (This is an extended style, where the roots will be twisted up for a while. Moisturize now, so they won’t be dry later.)
  2. In the back at the nape, part hair horizontally, creating a row of locs. Place the rest of your locs in a rubberband to separate the parted sections.
  3. On one side, flat twist your locs, forming a flat roll towards the center. Once at the center, rubberband  the ends and leave them loose for now. Repeat on the other side. The result is opposing flat twists with hanging ends in the center. (If your locs are shorter, you can secure with bobby pins as you twist.)
  4. Create another parted row from your rubberbanded locs, and repeat the flat twists on each side. Continue steps 2 and 3 until you reach the crown.
  5. You now have a twisted Mohawk with hanging ends down the center. You can either flat twist these ends up towards the crown as in a French-roll style, or if  your length won’t allow, cross the ends at the center and secure with pins.
  6. At the crown, use pipe cleaners to curl individual locs or to set small sections.
  7. Once curled, you can strategically pin some of your curls up and leave others hanging. The front will look like a mountain of curled locs.

Ledisi2To maintain, tie up at night with a silky scarf. Mist with a light oil as needed to keep locs supple.
